Types of Washer Issues
What’s the worst thing that can go awry with a washer? You can probably already guess the answer: a washer leak. Leaks are so dangerous because they don’t just affect the washer. They can affect your whole house. A leaking washer can spill water all over the floor, ruining your carpet or hardwood flooring. Worse still, if your washer is on the second floor, the water might seep down through your drywall and cause even more damage. If you have a washer leak, there are a couple steps you can take to mitigate the damage:
Handle all leaks immediately! If you see a small leak, don’t ignore it. Small leaks turn into big leaks very quickly. Remember the story of the boy with his finger in the dike? The same principle applies here.
While you are waiting for a repairman to come, install a tray or drain pan around your washer. These pans are cheap and they greatly reduce the damage done to your home by a leak.
After leaks, the worst issue that can occur with a washer typically involves the transmission or bearing. If your machine shakes loudly and moves around like it’s dancing to a death metal concert, and you tried without success to balance it, then you might have a bearing issue. With transmission or bearing issues, the cost of repair is so high that buying a new washer is often the more economical option. Fortunately, not all problems are so severe. The most common issues with newer washers are clogged drains and faulty drain pumps. On older top loaders, the most problematic components are motor couplers and lid switches. If you have an older model and the washing machine starts a cycle and sits there without doing anything, it’s likely a lid switch problem, and the repair will be pretty easy.
If there’s a leak or other serious issue, then you might need to buy a new washer altogether. People often ask us which brands of washer we recommend. We don’t have any particular brands that we’d say are significantly better than others. Still, we have a couple of recommendations:
Buy a top loading washer rather than a front loading one. There are a number of additional things that can go wrong on the front loader, such as the door gasket malfunctioning.
Buy something simple with a mechanical timer rather than one with a control board. Once again, the most parts there are, the more potential there is for something to go wrong.
